INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller has won a two-man race with 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith for the 2011 Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Miller, the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, sparked a defensive turnaround in Denver with his steady and sometimes spectacular play. He teamed with quarterback Tim Tebow to energize the Broncos, who rallied from a 2-5 record to the AFC West title and a playoff win over Pittsburgh. “It’s special because you only get one rookie season,” Miller said. “You don’t get two tries at it. It’s really a one-and-done thing. That was probably the most special thing about it, you only get one shot to accomplish this feat.” Miller received 39 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. Smith, also a first-round choice, got the other 11. The awards were presented on an “NFL Honors” primetime special Saturday night on NBC. “Aldon and me are good friends. If he got it, I wouldn’t have been mad. That’s still like my buddy,” Miller said. “If anybody else would have gotten him, I probably would have been sick. But knowing him and knowing what kind of guy he is and spending time with him, I know what type of player he is and he deserved it, too.” The second Bronco to win the award — LB Mike Croel got it in 1991 — Miller made 64 tackles and had 11 1/2 sacks despite missing one game and playing the last four contests with a cumbersome cast protecting his surgically repaired right thumb. “The thumb is a setback,” Broncos coach John Fox said. “I mean, I can’t deny that. It affects what you can do with that one hand. I don’t have any doubts in my mind he would have shattered any types of records. With all due respect, I’m convinced he would have shattered any records if he’d have stayed 100 percent.” And as good as Miller was this year, he promised he’ll be even better next year. “I have no doubt that I’ll be a totally different player next year,” he said. “It will be night and day.” (Copyright 2012 by The Associated Press. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Someday, Tim Tebow hopes to be playing in the Super Bowl rather than just visiting. The Denver Broncos quarterback made the media rounds at the Super Bowl on Thursday, talking about everything from what he needs to work on before next season to his admiration for Eli Manning and Tom Brady to his video game rivalry with his brother. “You play the game to be in a game like this,” Tebow said during a taping of “NBC Sports Talk Live from the Super Bowl,” which was to air later Thursday. “It’s definitely a dream to be in a game like this.” Tebowmania swept the country after Tebow led the Broncos on five fourth-quarter comebacks and four overtime victories – each more improbable than the last. He spawned a new verb, “Tebowing” – the practice of kneeling on one knee, elbow perched on the other, fist to forehead – and everyone from skiing star Lindsey Vonn to high school kids was soon doing it. There was even a website devoted to the practice. But a week after connecting with Demaryius Thomas on an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of overtime to beat heavily favored Pittsburgh in the wild-card round, Tebow and the Broncos were embarrassed by the New England Patriots. “That Tom Brady is really good,” Tebow said when asked what he learned from the game. “And just to continue to work. … If we get better and continue to work, anything can happen.” Tebow’s detractors have said he’d be better suited to play running back in the NFL than quarterback, with an unorthodox throwing motion. But Broncos boss John Elway has already declared Tebow the starter going into next season’s training camp, and the quarterback said he knows where he needs to improve. “Definitely my footwork and drops,” he said. “Getting from receiver to receiver, my progressions. I continue to try and work on things and I was very blessed to have a good quarterback coach in Mike McCoy. But, ultimately, I’m just going out there and playing football.” Asked whether he’d prefer to run or throw a pass if he had only one play to win a game, Tebow said he didn’t care. “Probably the pass because I can get one more player involved in the game,” he said. “As long as we get a W, I don’t care how it happens.” By NANCY ARMOUR, AP National Writer (© Copyright 2012 The Associated Press. DENVER (AP) — Tim Tebow has canceled an appearance at a revival organized by a controversial Ohio preacher, a spokesman for the star athlete said Wednesday. The Denver Broncos quarterback and dedicated Christian had been scheduled to speak at a three-day Columbus event in March led by televangelist Rod Parsley. Tebow’s brother Robbie said in a phone interview that he was canceling the talk. Robbie Tebow said his brother’s speakers’ bureau hadn’t researched the event before saying yes to the invitation. “I know for a fact that Tim is not going to be a part of it,” Robbie Tebow said. “That’s being resolved.” Parsley teaches that God wants the faithful to be rich. Last year, he asked followers to donate more than $1 million to ward off satanic attacks. In the 2008 presidential election, Republican Sen. John McCain disowned an endorsement from Parsley after learning the pastor called Islam an “anti-Christ” religion. Parsley’s gathering is called “Contending for the Faith Weekend.” Texas televangelist Kenneth Copeland, who also preaches the prosperity gospel, is another featured speaker, according to the event website. Mark Youngkin, a spokesman for Parsley, said the quarterback has a contract with the event organizers, who have asked Tebow to reconsider. Youngkin said national advertising for the event had just been approved Tuesday. “The ball’s in their court at this point,” Youngkin said. DENVER (Denver Business Journal) – Tim Tebow, the Denver Broncos’ quarterback, is one of the National Football League’s five most marketable players, according to a survey of sports business executives, analysts and media figures by Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily. Tebow, who led the Broncos to the playoffs for the first time since the 2005 season, comes in at No. 5 among NFL players in marketability in the survey. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) – The links and lakes were appealing to Jack Del Rio, just not as enticing as the green grass and white lines of the football field where he’s spent most of his life. So, after briefly contemplating sitting out the 2012 season, Del Rio decided to jump right back into the NFL fray, replacing Dennis Allen as Denver’s defensive coordinator this week. He could have sat back and relaxed while earning the $5 million left on his contract when the Jacksonville Jaguars fired him in November. Now, the Jaguars will pay him the difference between that total and his salary in Denver. “Yeah, I thought a lot about it,” Del Rio said of sitting out the season. “I had a lot of advice from my friends who are professionals out there.” They all told him to stay away from the game and take a sabbatical from all those stressful Sundays at the stadium. “But I love to compete,” said Del Rio, a former linebacker for the Saints, Chiefs, Cowboys and Vikings before embarking on a coaching career. Del Rio’s hiring reunites Broncos coach John Fox with his first defensive coordinator from Carolina. “It’s good to be back with him,” Del Rio said. “He’s a good man, he’s a good coach.” Del Rio left Fox’s Panthers staff after one year and went 69-73 in 8 1/2 seasons with the Jaguars, including 1-2 in the playoffs. He demurred when asked Monday if he aspires to be a head coach again. “Right now, I’m excited to be here,” he said. “I had nine good years in Jacksonville. Maybe someday. But that’s really not in the forefront of my thinking. Right now, first and foremost for me is to get settled in here and get to work in terms of evaluating the tape and the season and getting ready for the offseason, personnel and all those things, system adjustments. And getting my family settled.” Del Rio said the two months he had away from the game were more than enough to make him miss it. “I certainly had some time to sit back and reflect and I’m very appreciative of the time I had down there, nine wonderful years competing, a great place to raise a family,” Del Rio said. “And so, there was time to kind of reflect on that, kind of decompress a little bit, kind of unwind. I did some of that. And I find myself right now rejuvenated.” He couldn’t wait to get started, either. So, while the rest of Fox’s staff takes a break this week, Del Rio is putting in long hours at the team’s Dove Valley complex to catch up on the defense he inherited. Allen left after one year in Denver to serve as the head coach of the Oakland Raiders after his aggressive style helped the Broncos recover from a miserable 2010 season in which they fielded the league’s worst defense. The Broncos reached the playoffs for the first time since 2005 and upset Pittsburgh in the playoffs before losing to New England. “They made some strides last year,” Del Rio said. “We just want to build on that and … help this football team win. I feel like last year was a good start in that direction.” Del Rio is the Broncos’ seventh defensive coordinator in seven seasons. Other men who have filled the Mile High musical chair in the last six seasons are Larry Coyer (2006), Jim Bates (2007), Bob Slowik (2008), Mike Nolan (2009) and Don Martindale (2010). With such annual turnover, it wasn’t surprising when safety Brian Dawkins tweeted, “Love the hire, just hope we can keep him around,” when Del Rio’s hiring was announced Friday night. “That’s an unusual thing to have happen,” Del Rio said of a team having a different coordinator in each of seven straight seasons. “… I can’t really speak to what it was before and I have no idea about what it’s going to be going forward, but I know I’m fired up to be here.” Coming over from Jacksonville with Del Rio is strength and conditioning coach Luke Richesson, who spent the last three seasons on the Jaguars staff. DENVER (AP) — John Fox and Jack Del Rio are together again. The Denver Broncos announced Friday night they had agreed to terms with Del Rio to become the club’s new defensive coordinator. HONOLULU (CBS4/AP) – Six Denver Broncos players are reaping the rewards of having good seasons. They are enjoying an all-expenses trip to Hawaii for the Pro Bowl. The players all consider the experience a reward. It’s a relaxed atmosphere where they get to hang out with the best players in the game. Von Miller in Hawaii for the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl (credit: CBS) Last year the NFL actually played the game in Miami, but this year it’s back really where it belongs, and the players told CBS4′s Vic Lombardi they enjoy everything about the week and the game. Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey is no stranger to the islands. Bailey is making his 11th trip to the Pro Bowl. “A lot of people wouldn’t come to Hawaii if not for the Pro Bowl,” Bailey said. “It would be disappointing if they moved it, but I have no say in it. If I did, I would say keep it here because I love it here.” Watch interviews with Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins in the video clip below: var videoCanvas = new WNVideoWidget("WNVideoCanvas",
